FDA Announces DUNS Numbers Acceptable As Importer ID

Posted by Sarah Lilly on 4/5/17 5:03 PM

On March 30, 2017 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a guidance document announcing that FDA will now be accepting Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) numbers issued by Dun & Bradstreet as an acceptable unique facility identifier (UFI) for the purposes of the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP).

Initially, FDA proposed to require the FSVP importer’s name as well as DUNS number for each food product line entry being brought into the US. However, after comments made during the comment period, the final rule was revised to only require an acceptable UFI, of which a DUNS number is now listed. When the final rule goes into effect, the FSVP importer’s name, electronic mailing address, and UFI will be required.

The FSVP regulations go into effect on May 30, 2017.
