European Parliament Votes in Favor of CETA

On February 15, 2017 in a fact sheet published by the European Commission, it was announced the European Parliament had voted in favor of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the European Union (EU) and Canada (CETA).

According to the fact sheet, “CETA's progressive nature will set a new global standard for sustainability chapters in trade agreements.”

Among other topics, CETA will:

  • Cut Tariffs
  • Provide Investment Protection
  • Deliver Farm and Food Producer Opportunities
  • Protect Workers Rights’ and the Environment

CETA will provisionally enter into force following ratification by the Canadian Parliament. Once all Member States ratify the agreement it will be fully implemented.
