EU Canada Trade Agreement (CETA) – Update

Posted by Matt Schmitt on 9/19/17 4:22 PM

Effective September 21, 2017, most provisions of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will go into force.

EU exporters of goods to Canada who wish to benefit from the reduced import tariffs that the CETA offers, are reminded that origin status in terms of this agreement is evidenced by an invoice statement.  In order to apply the invoice statement, registration is required under the EU's Registered Exporter System (REX).  The European Commission published the following detailed guidelines:

  1. Apply for a Registered Exporter (REX) number by completing this form.
  2. Send the completed form to your national Customs Office
  3. You will then receive a REX number to indicate on the origin declaration to be provided on the commercial document that describes the product
  4. The originating product will then benefit from CETA in Canada on the basis of the origin declaration.

Under CETA, approximately 99% of all duties will be eliminated.
