APHIS Withdraws Proposed Rule on Genetically Engineered Organisms

In a Federal Register Notice published on November 7, 2017, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) withdrew a proposed rule on the importation, interstate movement, and environmental release of genetically engineered organisms.

First proposed in January 2017, the rule would have “entailed assessing new GE organisms to determine if they posed plant pest or noxious weed risks and then regulating only organisms that did present risks.” APHIS decided to withdraw the rule, after the comments received, in order to promote more dialogue on the subject.
