THE OPPORTUNITY

North Coast Medical and Expeditors faced several fulfillment challenges. The ever-growing customer expectations for shorter order lead times required faster pick and pack operations from our teams. At the same time, North Coast Medical’s product assortment was expanding, and their daily volumes growing. Competitors also reduced the supply of skilled labor by opening new fulfillment centers in the area. Lastly, the COVID-19 pandemic put pressure on reducing shared touch points and increasing social distancing in the warehouse. We had to find a way to improve our fulfillment capability and capacity while driving down costs.

"In order for us to stay competitive in the marketplace from an order accuracy standpoint and shipping speed, the Expeditors team knew they had to take a leap forward with technology. 6 River Systems allowed them to do just that."

our solution

BRING IN THE ROBOTS

We deployed our in-house engineering team
to uncover the optimal solution. The result had to
be scalable, quick to implement without business
interruption, and provide a favorable return on
investment.

After evaluating several options and robotics
providers, we selected 6 River Systems to
deploy autonomous robots to improve the picking
process. The robots utilize artificial intelligence
to guide warehouse workers on the most efficient
picking paths, and enable them to fulfill more than
one order at a time per location, reducing overall
order assembly times and improving accuracy.

THE RESULTS

The project was deemed a success almost immediately.
Although it took two months of process planning
and two weeks to implement, this is considered
exceptionally efficient for warehouse automation.
Since the deployment, the outbound speed has
increased by 100%, without loss of accuracy. The
warehouse personnel also appreciate how the robots
make their jobs easier while allowing for increased
social distancing.
