Overview

Expeditors began working as Nissan’s customs broker in 1993 clearing vehicles and service parts arriving from Japan into the U.S. The relationship has expanded to include manufacturing, technical center, forklift, and other Nissan business segments. Currently, we work closely with Nissan in supporting new customs and supply chain security programs through continuous improvement and joint collaboration.

The Opportunity: ACE Development

The Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) is U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP’s) enhanced system for tracking, controlling, and processing all commercial goods into the United States for customs and Partner Government Agencies. ACE is the new system that replaced CBP’s former Automated Commercial System (ACS) that Expeditors and importers have used for decades.

Transitioning from ACS to ACE was a massive undertaking, requiring additional information to be collected and managed, new processes designed, and significant programming and data collection changes implemented, all of which needed to be completed under strict CBP requirements and deadlines.

Our Solution

Successful implementation of CBP’s new ACE required that this shift did not cause any interruptions to the supply chain while also ensuring that CBP’s strict requirements were met.

Our role in this implementation significantly changed the way in which Nissan North America (NNA) presents Customs Entry Information to CBP. During this time of transition, these actions helped NNA facilitate the shipment of manufacturing and service parts as well as finished vehicles.

The Results

Our teams were able to ensure the uninterrupted customs clearance of high-volume just-in-time Nissan imports while maintaining a comprehensive control of compliance for both production plants and aftermarket supply. The value of a robust compliance program is a fully automated process that achieves integration and systemic improvement.
